The University of Mindanao A Brief History

            The University in Mindanao is known before as Mindanao Colleges. It was opened in Davao City to the public in July 1946. It was the school to offer the tertiary education in Southern Mindanao that aims to provide learning opportunities to the indigenous natives and pioneers of Mindanao.

              It was dream come true for the CPA-Lawyer Guillermo E. Torres, Sr. and his friends who help to runs the Mindanao Colleges in 1946 who’s ENGR. Brigido Valencia, Atty. Pedro Quitain, Atty. Dominador Zuño, Mr. Pedro Lat, Atty. Jesus Occeña, Dr. Manuel Babao, Mr. Nicasio Torres and Dra. Concepcion de Asis.

         However, the first of operation, there were just only composed 13 teachers with 381 students and four rented rooms in Borgaily Building at san Pedro Street. The first commencement exercise was held on April 23, 1946 with 30 and 50 graduating students from college and high school were people in the community is then  to witness the success of operation of the Mindanao Colleges. Moreover the Mindanao Colleges expanded and established their branches to its neighboring provinces of Davao City. The branches said to operates in public to give more educational attainment for the natives specially those financially deprived students. These are Mindanao Colleges Digos, Mindanao Colleges Sta. Ana in 1949; Mindanao Colleges Peñaplata and Mindanao Colleges Tagum in 1950; Mindanao Colleges Guinga, Mindanao Colleges Tibungco and Mindanao Colleges Panabo in 1951; Mindanao Colleges Cotabato in 1959 and Mindanao Colleges Bansalan in 1962. After all as years passed by Mindanao colleges chartered as the Mindanao Colleges, Inc., the first University who is non-sectarian institution which was signed by Honorable Pedro Parcasio, then the acting Secretary of Education.  The success of University of Mindanao and its biggest expansion within Davao City and to its neighboring provinces then offer also a lot of responsibilities and opportunities to both institution and the public. This is said to continue to give access to the natives and continue the educational heritage envisioned by the late founder Guillermo E. Torres Sr.

Currently, the University of Mindanao in Davao City has three campuses the Main campus along Bolton and Bonifacio Streets. The Matina- Maa Campus and the Technical School Campus in Sta. Ana Avenue and in Toril. The main bigger Matina-Maa campus is the center for learning vision that is worthy. It is being separated into different building that is envision for different college program and for the concept fo the premier state university namely: The BE Building houses which was the house of College of Accounting Education and College of Engineering Education. DPT and GET Buildings, in which the former houses the College of Architecture and fine Arts Education, College of Health Sciences Education , College of Arts Sciences Education while the latter Building is used and occupied by the College of Criminal Justice Education and Teachers Education. However, the newly building that were established for the seasoned who would like to pursued their Master’s and Doctorate degrees. The College of Hospitality Education is suited at the C.H.E. building; the basic Education and Building that is designed for the young students of Elementary and High School. Lastly, the College of Business Education is at the Social Sciences Building in Bolton and the College of Law.

University Of Mindanao-Facilities     

            The University of Mindanao improve its facilities from the Basic Education down to College Education and to basic facilities down to highly improved facilities. The University of Mindanao is committed to construct the comfortable facilities for the students in both Davao Campus and to its neighboring campuses along in different provinces. And these include the air-conditioned library that is comfortable to study and recreate learning to individual students. The Audio-Visual Rooms that is capable to adhere the comfort of guests and forum events. The speech laboratories that are adhere the standard learning for the students. The Mini-Hotel that is capable to access for the students of hospitality that suited to them to get in the real world of hospitality. The engineering and the sciences laboratories that is capable to address the hands on learning for the students for it’s designed their facilities from basic equipment down to heavy equipment. The different learning resource center, computing Laboratories Center, e-learning and the interactive English Language Center that upholds the access of students to their educational needs.

That would help student discovering, honoring, and nurturing their potential like polishing diamond in the rough and raw when they enter the university. Moreover the University of Mindanao is also guided by its motto Vincit Omnia Veritas (truth conquers all) that manifested in its fundamental core values: excellence, honesty and integrity, innovation and teamwork. However, the seasoned is adhere also to its motto Eminentia Urgueo  et Veritas (knowledge in pursuit of truth). 

University of Mindanao (UM) Matina is the only university in Davao included in the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) list of universities with the most number of centers of excellence (COE) and centers of development (COD). It remains the top ranking school in Davao and fourth in Mindanao.
 The university has center of excellence in teacher education and centers of development in computer engineering and information technology.
